HAFLONG, Dec 5: Sikpui Ruoi – the annual harvesting festival of Hmar Community was celebrated at public ground of Moulhoi village near Haflong on Wednesday.
The colourful celebration was attended by Assam’s Hills Area Development minister Sum Ronghang as chief guest along with Chief Executive Member, N.C. Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Debolal Garlosa; Dima Hasao deputy commissioner Amitabh Rajkhuwa; Executive Member Kulendra Daulagupu among executive members; Hmar community leaders, dignitaries, Hmar youth and a huge gathering of the locals. The celebration also marked the silver jubilee celebration of government recognition of the festival.
The festival was also celebrated in all Hmar dominated areas of Dima Hasao district with zeal and gaiety on Wednesday apart from Haflong. The festival was also observed in Retzole, Mulkhoi and other parts with considerable Hmar population in the district.
The men and women were seen with full or least one of the colourful traditional costumes during post-harvest festival of the Hmar tribe.
The main attractions of Sikpui Ruoi was Hmar cultural programmes including traditional dances dance troupes, musical programme, community traditional feast and traditional dances performed by the students and community. The programme was also attended by the village head, Church elders, Sr. citizen and community, during Sikpui fest foods and refreshment is also been served to people in traditional style.
The festival brought a sense of harmony among all the people and it was this harmonious relationship that made the feast so unique. Mention be made here that for Sikpui Ruoi festival the Dima Hasao district was declared a holiday on Wednesday.
