Udalguri, April 3: Former student leader, social worker and prominent citizen of undivided Darrang district, Likhan Das a resident of Tangla town of Udalguri district passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati at the age of 60 on Friday night.
A large number of people from all walks of life thronged his residence since early morning on Saturday to pay tribute to the bereaved soul. His body was later taken to Tangla Srimanta Sankardev Satra, Tangla Xahitya Xabha Bhawan, Tangla anchalik AASU office (Swahid Bhawan) , Tangla Motor Sramik Association where people offered floral tribute and gamochas as a mark of respect.
Tangla Municipal Board and Tangla Chamber of Commerce have also ordered for shuttering down of the business establishments of Tangla town on Sunday from 2 pm to 4 pm as a mark of respect to the bereaved soul.
Born in January 24, 1961 to prominent businessman Late Basudev Das and Late Yamuna Bala Das in Tangla town of undivided Darrang district he had an uncompromising zeal and regional sentiment and had been president of Tangla Anchalik Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and had taken a torchbearer role in historic Assam movement. He had served as president of Udalguri chapter of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) among others.
His death was widely mourned by various organizations and institutions including Tangla Anchalik committee of AASU, AJYCP, Tangla Xahitya Xabha, Udalguri chapter of Asom Gana Parishad, Tangla Media Circle,Tangla Press Club among others.
AASU vice-president Jayanta Kumar Bhattacharya, former Rajya Sabha MP, Santiuse Kujur; Udalguri chapter BJP vice-president Jaykanta Sarma; Udalguri chapter,AGP President Jatin Deka also condoled his untimely demise.
