Fresh M’laya bid to grab Assam land foiled

HAMREN, Oct 27: In a fresh bid to occupy Assam’s land, Meghalaya government has laid a foundation for construction of a welfare scheme under MLA’s Local Area Development Fund (MLADF) at No 2 Umri in West Karbi Anglong district on Friday.

However, a team of police and district administration officials led by deputy commissioner Debajyoti Hazarika and superintendent of police Mrinal Talukdar demolished the foundation on Saturday.

Meghalaya continued to grab land in forest areas of Amreng, Socheng, Chingthong and Amri MAC constituencies in West Karbi Anglong for the past 10 years.

In its recent move on October 12, Meghalaya constructed a pillar inside reserve forest under Khanduli Border Outpost in West Karbi Anglong district. However, the pillar was noticed by the officials of the forest department and it was demolished by a team of officials led by range officer Bhogesor Teron on the next day.

On July 12, miscreants’ from Meghalaya reportedly entered Chinthong in West Karbi Anglong district and put up a signboard proclaiming that the area belonged to them.
