Govt to lay special emphasis for qualitative development of hill areas: Sonowal; 67th foundation day of KarbiAnglong Autonomous Council

DIPHU, June 23: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday stressed the need for judicious utilisation of Central funds for development of hill areas of the state.

Sonowal said there should be no misuse of funds released to the autonomous councils.

Addressing as the chief guest in the 67th foundation day celebration of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) at Jaising Doloi auditorium here on Saturday, Sonowal conveyed his government’s support and help to CEM Tuliram Ronghang-led KAAC and said that the state government would ensure that under the present dispensation all the sections of the people of the hill district enjoy the fruits of development.

“It is your duty to ensure that the funds (given to KAAC) be put to good use. And in this case (chief executive member of KAAC) Tuliram Ronghang told me not to worry and promised me that all funds given by the state and centre will be utilised properly. Our government has been fighting against corruption. We want a society where everybody lives in peace, equality and dignity, a society where everybody have the opportunity to progress,” Sonowal said

Sonowal said that the state government has laid special importance for the equal development of all 33 districts of the state. The three hill districts of the state were not given much importance by the previous governments. However, the present state government has given stressed development of the hill areas. Besides the Central schemes, special schemes from the state government have been implemented to expedite socio-economic development of the districts, he said.

The chief minister said efforts are on the way to make Karbi Anglong an organic district. Equal attention will be given along with the districts of the state.

Sonowal acknowledged the immense role of the Karbis in forging a greater Assamese society. The chief minister said that both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts have immense potentials and  therefore, he called upon the people to work hard to utilise the verdant potentials to make the districts attractive tourists destinations of the state.

The chief minister also appealed to the parents and teachers of Kari Anglong districts to educate their wards and students with moral values to help them to get rid of the myriad influence of superstitions.

Referring to the recent killing of two young artistes in Dokmoka, Sonowal said that the innocent people of KarbiAnglong need to be apprehensive as the state government is committed to provide safety and security to all innocent residents of the state. He also maintained that the perpetrators of the barbaric killing will be handed out exemplary punishment. He at the same time thanked litterateur and former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha Rong Bong Terang for speaking on the age old amity and friendship of KarbiAnlong with the main stream of the state and eased the situation amid tensions.

He also thanked CEM Tuliram Ronghang for taking decision of installing two statues of stain artistes at Karbi Anglongand hoped that this would strengthen the friendship and bonhomie between the hills and plains of Assam.

He also said that to fight against the ills of superstitions, Assam government has introduced a programme called ‘Sanskar’ at every development block in the state.

Speaking on the occasion, HAD minister Sum Ronghang gave a snapshot of all the development schemes formulated for the development of KarbiAnglong.

Earlier the CEM Tuliram Ronghang appreciated Sonowal government for taking steps for development of Karbi Anglong. “The chief minister has always advised to create work culture and end bandh culture. Work culture is needed for the development of the society and all round achievement. In 24 hours we are trying to work for 18 hours. In a single day the chief minister has inaugurated schemes worth Rs. 350 crore which is to be praised worthy. The state government has given special package for Karbi Anglong. When the council was under the ASDC-CPI(ML) and during the time of Congress 15 year rule, there was no special package.”

“ The Centre has granted special package of Rs. 200 crore of which Rs. 94 crore has already been given to us and the rest will be given soon. After the Sonowal government took over Rs. 250 crore in total has been allotted for development of every council constituency which need to be praised. Each council constituency has been allotted Rs. 10 crore for construction of sports complex, cultural complex, gallery and open stage,” the CEM said..

On the need for more funds, he said, “The area of Karbi Anglong is vast. It is bigger than Goa, Sikkim and Tripura. It is bigger than Mauritius and Singapore. We have been demanding for a long time for the implementation of what is in the Indian Constitution, let Art. 244(A) be implemented to solve our problems. But before the implementation of Autonomous State, the bad road communication in Karbi Anglong should be solved. And for this the state government has promised to spend Rs. 500 crore for building roads in Karbi Anglong in the next three years.”

He further said, “Different communities have been living here for long. We want a peaceful Karbi Anglong. We want to be part of greater Assam and do not want to divide it, we will stay in Assam, but I request that our problems should be solved.”

Lok Sabha member Biren Sing Engti, MLA from Howraghat, Jairam Engleng, MLA from Bokajan Dr.Numal Momin and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Hamren

The 67the foundation day of Karbi Angling Autonomous Council (KAAC) was also celebrated in Hamren secretariat of the council on Saturday.

A day long programme was chalked out on the occasion with hoisting of national flag by EM Rupsing Teron at 7.30 am.

Later, homage was paid to the architect of Karbi Anglong, Semson Sing Engti at his statute. The programme was led by Baithalangso MLA Dr. Mansing Rongpi. MAC Prabad Chandra Taro Pawan Roy, OSD Sona Terang and a host of dignitaries.

Later, a public meeting was organised at Hamren New Market, which was presided over by EM Rupsing Teron. A plantation programme was also organised at Hamren town to mark the occasion.
