KOKRAJHAR, April 20: Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief and Bodo People’s Front (BPF) president Hagrama Mohilary is confident of his party’s victory in the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency and said UPPL candidate UG Brahma and sitting MP Naba Kumar Sarania will not be factors in this election.
Mohilary took part in a Delhi Chalo programme organised by BPF in support of its candidate Pramila Rani Brahma, in which thousands of party member and supporters took part. The rally began from Green Field, traversed to JD Road to New Fly Over near Kokrajhar town. Mohilary also claimed that the BJP-BPF-AGP combine will win 12 Lok Sabha seats out of 14 in Assam this election.
Hectic political activities began in Kokrajhar for the upcoming 3rd phase Lok Sabha election slated on April 23. A total of nine candidates are in the fray from this constituency. However, the main fight will be between the Congress, UPPL and BPF.
BJP-BPF-AGP candidate and social welfare minister Pramil Rani Brahma, UPPL candidate UG Brahma, Congress candidate Sabdaram Rabha and independent candidate Naba Kumar Sarania are the major contenders, while CPI(M) candidate Biraj Deka is also considered as an influential candidate this time.
UPPL candidate UG Brahma accompanied by All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) president Promod Boro also campaigned in several places, including Banargaon in Kokrajhar and Bijni in Chirang district on Saturday.
In his address, ABSU president Boro said the BPF has failed to fulfill aspirations of the people of the Bodo-dominated areas. “They have failed to develop our areas. But they have surely developed themselves in the past years,” Boro said.
On the other hand, Congress candidate Sabdaram Rabha has also geared up election campaign at Ultapani and Saralpara in Kokrajhar district. Meanwhile, former chief minister of Tripura and senior CPIM leader Manik Sarkar addressed an election meeting for party candidate Biraj Deka at Bhawanipur in Barpeta. Sarkar said that CPIM was working for the overall development of the society.
