Hailakandi makes rapid strides in health metrics

Hailakandi, Sept 11: Southern Assam’s aspirational district Hailakandi has made rapid strides in one of the key metrics – health and nutrition.

In comparison to Assam’s overall 48%, Hailakandi has registered 59.51% in the percentage of pregnant women receiving four or more antenatal care check-ups. 87.73% pregnant women have registered for antenatal care within the first trimester as against the State’s 82%.

Health authorities point out that a sizeable 90.30% of pregnant women are regularly taking supplementary nutrition under the ICDS programme.

In terms of institutional deliveries to total deliveries, Hailakandi district has registered 82.42% to the State’s overall 70.6%. The target set for the current financial year is 88%.

The district has registered 20.81% to the State’s 12.30% in deliveries at home attended by Skill Birth Attendance (SBA) health workers. The sex ratio at birth is 950 females to 1,000 males in the district.

The percentage of underweight children under 6 years is only 4.80% to the State’s 15.80%. Severe Acute Malnourishment (SAM) in children under 6 years is a mere 0.24%.

Hailakandi district has fared much better so far as breast feeding children in the age group of 6-23 months receiving adequate diet is concerned. In comparison to the State’s 14.80% and country’s 39.50%, the aspirational district has registered a whopping 86.88%. That is not all. When it comes to initiating breastfeeding within an hour of birth, Hailakandi scores high with 99.91%.

The percentage of children fully immunized in the age group of 9-11 months is an impressive 98.26%.

In treatment of tuberculosis, the success rate is on the higher side at 93.18% than the State’s overall 83%.

The proportion of functional First Referral Units (FRUs) against the norm of 1 per 500,000 population is a staggering 100% in comparison to the national average of only 36%. However, the proportion of specialist services available in district hospital against Indian Public Health Standards norms is 60%.

The health authorities are now focused on converting sub centres and public health centres into health and wellness centres and the target for the current fiscal is 17%.
