GUWAHATI, July 10: One person was killed while another was injured seriously in two incidents of landslides in the capital city since Tuesday forcing the Kamrup (metro) district administration to withdraw all permissions of excavation of land and extraction/blasting of stone within the district.
“In view of the present monsoon season, possibilities of land slide and for the greater interest of public, all permissions of excavation of land and extraction/blasting of stone within Kamrup Metropolitan district, even if permissions accorded earlier for execution of various Central & state government projects as well as individuals are banned with immediate effect until further order by the district magistrate and deputy commissioner of Kamrup (Metropolitan) district Biswajit Pegu vide an order issued today,” an official release informed here Wednesday.
Incessant rains triggered landslide at Jorabat in the outskirts of the city on Tuesday night in which an elderly person was injured seriously injured. Another person was killed in a separate incident of landslide at Garchuk on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Narayan Sah, a resident of Bethani hill at Garchuk’s Katahbah area.
“Due to incessant rains at around 9 am, a huge rock fell from the hill on Narayan Sah’s home. As a result, Sah, who was inside his home during the incident, received serious injuries,” said a local resident.
“Seriously injured Sah was immediately shifted to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) where he was declared brought dead,” he added.
Local residents blamed some unscrupulous traders for the incident of landslide at Katahbari saying that illegal earth-cutting was going on in the Bethani hill.
