GUWAHATI, Sept 15: In a major breakthrough, a team of crime branch and operation branch of the city police arrested one more suspected operative of Hizb-ul-Mukjahideen, Omar Farooq from Byrnihat area on Assam-Meghalaya boundary on Saturday evening.
Farooq was working as a carousel operator with Ananda Mela at Byrnihat. He was brought to Dispur Police Station for interrogation. Omar Farooq hails from Soalbari area of Hojai and was suspected to be maintaining close relation with Kamar-uz-Zaman, the HUM operative arrested from Kanpur of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police official here said.
He is the second operative of the banned outfit arrested in the state. The first HuM operative Shahnawaz Alam was arrested from Hojai district on Thursday.
The police have intensified operations in the state after the arrest of HuM operative Qamar-uz-Zaman from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Zaman hails from Jamunamukh in Hojai district.
“A team of Assam Police visited Uttar Pradesh for interrogation of Zaman. We want to know the activities of the outfit in the state,” said Special DGP Pallab Bhattacharya here Saturday.
“Shahnawaz Alam had received training in Kishtwar district in Jammu region of Jammu & Kashmir. Zaman was spotted in social media early this year while he was brandishing an AK-47. Zaman had plans to carry out subversive activity during Ganesh Chatturthi celebration,” he said.
On the other hand, Zaman’s mother told media that security forces have done a good job by arresting him. “Anybody who carries out war against the nation deserves such treatment. Zaman has brought bad name to the family,” she said.
She said, “My son is not greater than the country, I will not see his face. I prayed to God that he should get arrested.”
