Guwahati, Sept 24: At least five people died and six others were hospitalised after consuming illicit liquor at Talap area under Doomdooma police station in Tinsukia district on Sunday. The incident took place at a time when state excise department and police are conducting raids at various places against illegal liquor barons.
“The police and excise team seized few quantity of illicit liquor from a house owned by Ganju. It was likely to be sold today,” Tinsukia SP Mugdhajyoti Mahanta said.
At least 11 people got sick after consuming liquor. Later five died in the hospital, he said. The condition of six others is stated to be critical.
The deceased have been identified as Biswanath Tanti, Papu Thakur, David Kashyap, Biswanath Kashyap and Santosh Karmakar.
“Investigation is going on. We are waiting for the post mortem report,” Mahanta also said.
Meanwhile, Tinsukia DC had ordered an inquiry into the incident. On the other hand, superintendent of excise of Tinsukia district has filed an FIR in this connection. However, no arrest has so far been made in this connection.
