GUWAHATI, Dec 2: On the occasion of World AIDS Day, India tourism (North East), ministry of Tourism, Government of India organised an awareness campaign at NEPNI Group of Institutions, Hajo on Wednesday to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic among the nursing students. The program started with a short walkathon at around 11 am with a participation of more than 150 students. After the rally, the students gathered in an auditorium followed by the distribution of red ribbon badges in order to commemorate AIDS Day. The program proceeded with a brief introduction given on “World AIDS Day” which was followed by a lamp lighting ceremony and felicitation of the guests such as Manisha Hazarika (singer and social activist), Dr Shashanka Sekhar Chakravarty (assistant professor of Community Medicine, Gauhati Medical College), Babul Ali (executive president, NEPNI), Fakaruddin Ahmed (director of NEPNI), Rashita Begum (administrative officer, NEPNI), Khurshida Begum (trustee member, NEPNI), Beena Bora (principal, School of Nursing) and others. The eminent guest speakers Manisha Hazarika and Dr Sashanka Sekhar Chakravarty enlightened the students with their valuable words marking the occasion. The program then proceeded with on-spot activities for the students such as extempore speech and a quiz competition on HIV/AIDS. In the end, the winning prizes and certificates were distributed among the students. The main objective of the occasion was to show support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness.
