Guwahati, Dec 20: JD Institute of Fashion technology on December 18 pulled the curtain for its Annual Design Awards, after an absence of one year, at ITA Machkhowa. Making this event a success, innovation and design came alive at the hands of the budding designers from the institute.
Established in 2006, the institute remains a pioneer in the field of Art and Design. The institution was founded by Chandrakant Dalal (president) and RC Dalal (executive director & co-founder of Indian Film Festival) in 1988, and still remains a platform to ignite the students’ true potential and intelligence, irrespective of whether they are already aware of it or waiting to be discovered. in order for them to metamorphose into the confident, adaptive, best versions of themselves to fearlessly step into the ever-changing world of Design.
The director of JD Guwahati, Sumita Dey Deka shone a light on the very purpose of the annual awards saying that “the aim of the show is to propel its students in the professional field of interior design and fashion design”. The Annual Design Awards amalgamated the best minds from the domains of both fashion and interior design. Titles like Best Collection, Best Design, Outstanding Collection, Innovative Collection, Commercially Viable Design and Best Display further added to the students’ zeal of presenting their best work. This installation of the Annual Design Awards presented the theme of ‘Chaos’ which aptly suits the mood of the time. With the pandemic bringing us to an untimely halt, this year’s ADA came as a creative respite for the students of the institute.
Coming back to the day of innovation and creation, the students witnessed the presence of some eminent personalities such as Chetan Sharma, Regional head Visual Merchandiser of Future Group Retail- Central, Arup Kumar Das, Architect- Design and Development and Rajesh Agarwal Interior Designer. The collection presented by the students was judged by this panel of industry professionals. Adding to the aesthetic value of the event, the students from the fashion department presented an installation that highlights the paper cut work. On the other hand, the students from the interior design batch paid homage to the legacy of the institute by presenting an installation on “Stars of JD” that displays the name and work of the alumni.
In lieu of the theme of ‘Chaos’, this year’s collection brought to the forefront designs that stress on the very idea of ‘pattern in chaos’. Students presented collections that focus on metamorphosis or deconstruction. The collections named, Draupadi, Le Destroy, Burn Aesthetic, Hermaphroditus, Sangai Array, Ruffian, Coalescence, Mod Arch, United Fragment, No strings attached, Chaos to calm, Starr Grace, Tales of Navratna, Vinash Se Hi Srishti Ka Aarambh Hai, Chaos of the Ocean, Vlegsrok, Co-veatrix, and Orion were the sheer highlight of the event.
To quote the eminent directors, Harsh Dalal (executive director) appreciated the effort of the students in blending the social causes and the creative world of design together. Taking it forward, Ushmita Dey enlightened us on the amount of hard work that goes behind each of these collections. According to Rupal Dalal (director), “The Annual Design Awards has presented a platform to the students that give their product innovation and design a creative channel.”
