IMPHAL, Aug 12: Journalists in Imphal marched late last night from Manipur Press Club to the chief minister’s official bungalow demanding the release of one of their colleagues who was arrested by the Manipur police for uploading a post on social media which allegedly contained defamatory remarks.
Kishorchandra Wangkhemcha, who is working with IS TV, a local cable television news network, is still in the custody of the police till the filing of this report. The journalist was arrested on the night of August 9.
According to the reports received, representatives of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) met chief minister on Saturday night at around 10 pm to demand the release of the journalist.
Kishorchandra Wangkhemcha had allegedly posted something on Facebook which was “defamatory” in nature. Sources said that the post was sensitive which could create troubles. The journalist had posted the “defamatory remarks” on Thursday, according to the reports.
The reports then said that a “case has been registered under FIR no. 173(8)2018 IPS, under section 505(2)/500 IPC” against the journalist.
According to sources, the journalist is likely to be released anytime soon as chief minister, N Biren had reportedly assured the representatives of All Manipur Working Journalists Union.
