According to legend Kajir Ronghangpi was sent down to earth by Songsar richo – the creator. She was gifted with a one horned rhinoceros for ploughing the field for paddy. It is after her name that the present Kaziranga National Park is derived.
Kajir Ronghangpu was the youngest daughter of Hok Ronghang and Bong-e Teronpi. Hok Ronghang was a Karbi chief with the present Kaziranga under his jurisdiction. Kajir has elder sister Kading Ronghangpi and brother Sarsomon Ronghang. As a child Kajir has a divine personality and seeing this the angles took her to heaven. But she was sent back to earth in search of her parents. While descending to earth Kajir brought with her a rhinoceros for ploughing the field. After accomplishing the task she went back to heaven. She instructed her brother Sarsomon to cultivate paddy. The place where Kajir lived was called Kajir Arong – Kajir’s village. In due course of time Kajir Arong was turned into Kaziranga.
