DIPHU, Aug 8:A delegation of Karbi Union Nagaland (KUN) met chief secretary R. Binchilo Thong in Kohima on Thursday to discuss various problems faced by Karbis living in Nagaland.
In a statement issued by KUN stated that the KUN has been working for the protection of the Karbis residing in Nagaland. There are issues concerning various rights of the Karbis like pursuance of indigenous certificate and inclusion in the mini Hornbill festival.
In regard to the Registration of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), KUN has participated in several rounds of talks with Nagaland government, KUN said.
It also appealed to Nagaland government that the rights and privileges guaranteed by Nagaland government as well as the Central government should not be denied. It also said the KUN is taking initiative with Nagaland government for change of name of the tribe from Mikir to Karbi. KUN also demands for the use of Karbi customary laws within the Karbis in Nagaland as it is prevalent with Naga and other tribes in the state.
KUN president Moia Rongpi and general secretary Samuel Rongpi expressed their satisfaction with the meeting.
