Assam: BJP 9, Cong 3, AIUDF 1 ** Birensing Engti bites the dust, Bey wins

GUWAHATI, May 23: BJP surpassed its 2014 tally in Assam by winning nine seats, while the Congress won three, AIUDF and an independent candidate won seat even the two alliance partners AGP and BPF failed to open any account in the elections.

Of 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, BJP has won Silchar, Karimganj, Jorhat and Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Autonomous District (ST), Gauhati, Mangaldoi and Dibrugarh.

Two sitting MPs of Congress Birensing Engti and Susmita Dev have lost to the BJP, while two sitting MPs of BJP managed to retain their seats in the elections.

In Assam, out of 14 seats, the BJP has won Silchar, Karimganj, Jorhat and Lakhimpur seats and leading with a huge margin in Tezpur, Autonomous District, Gauhati, Mangaldoi and Dibrugarh seats.

Sitting BJP MP Pradan Baruah won from Lakhimpur seat, while Dr Rajdeep Roy won in Silchar defeating sitting Congress MP Sushmita Dev, Assam assembly Deputy Speaker Kripanath Mallah won in Karimganj seat defeating sitting AIUDF MP Radheshyam Biswas.

In No 3 Autonomouis District (ST constituency, BJP candidate Horensing Bey defeated his nearest rival sitting MP and Congress candidate Birensing Engti by a margin of 2,39,603 votes. Bey secured 3,81,228 votes (61.74%), while Engti secured a total of 1,41,625 votes (22.94%).

In Barpeta constituency, Congress candidate Abdul Khaleque defeated his nearest rival BJP-AGP candidate Kumar Deepak Das by a margin of 1,10,074 votes. Khaleque secured 5,85,599 (43.33%) votes while Das secured 4,75,525 votes (35.19%).

AIUDF supremo Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal retained the Dhubri seat by defeating his nearest rival Congress candidate Abu Taher Bepari by a margin of 2,26,350 votes. Ajmal secured 42.92% votes, while Bepari managed to secure 4,83,398 (29.24%) votes.

Sitting MP and BJP candidate Rameswar Telli retained the Dibrugarh seat by defeating his nearest rival Congress candidate and former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar by a margin of 3,63,320 votes. Telli secured 6,57,983 ((64.91%) votes, while Ghatowar managed to secure 2,94,663 (29.07%) votes.

In prestigious Gauhati constituency, BJP candidate and former Guwahati mayoress Queen Oja defeated her rival Congress candidate Bobbeeta Sharma by a margin of 3,46,021 votes. Oja secured 9,88,249 (57.47%) votes while Sharma managed to secure 6,42,228 (37.35%) votes.

In Jorhat constituency, BJP candidate and state power minister Topon Kumar Gogoi defeated his rival Congress candidate Sushanta Boragohain by a margin of 82,103 votes. Gogoi secured a total of 5,39,468 (51.35%) votes while Borgohain secured 5,39,468 (43.54%) votes.

Former chief minister tarun Gogoi’s son Gaurav Gogoi managed to reain his Kaliabor seat by defeating his rival AGP candidate Mani Madhav Mahanta by a margin of 2.06,788 votes. Gogoi received a total of 7,77,266 (55.14%) while mahanta received 5,70,478 (40.47%) votes.

In Karimganj constituency, BJP candidate Kripanath Mallah defeated his nearest rival AIUDF candidate by a margin of 38,389 votes. Mallah secured 4,73,046 (44.62%), while Biswas managed to get 4,73,046 (41%).

Independent candidate and former ULFA leader Naba Kumar Sarania retained the Kokrajhar seat by defeating his nearest rival BPF candidate and state social welfare minister Pramila Rani Brahma by a margin of 38,371 votes. Sarania secured a total of 4,79,500 ((32.84%) votes while Brahma got 4,41,129 (30.21%) votes.

Sitting MP and BJP candidate Pradan Baruah retained his Lakhimpur seat by defeating his rival Congress candidate Anil Borgohain by a margin of 3,45,810 votes. Barha secured a total of 7,69,099 ((60.4) vortes while Borgohain managed to get 4,23,289 (33.24%) votes.

In Mangaldoi seat, BJP candidate Dilip Kumar Saikia defeated his rival Congress candidate and Rajya Sabha member Bhubaneswar Kalita by a margin of 1,30,096 votes. Saikia secured 7,05,123 (48.66%) votes, while Kalita managed to get 5,75,027 (39.68%).

In Nowgong, Congress candidate and former minister Pradyut Bordoloi defeated his rival BJP candidate Rupak Sarma by a margin of 18,290 votes. Bordoloi secured 7,32,519 (49.59%) while Sarma secured 7,14,229 (48.35 votes).

In Silchar, BJP candidate Raajdeep Roy defeated his nearest rival Congress candidate and sitting MP Sushmita Dev by a margin of 80, 012 votes. Roy secured 4,96,235 (52.52%) while Dev managed to secure 4,16,233 (44.06%) votes.

In Tezpur constituency, BJP candidate and state labour minister Pallab Lochan Das defeated his rival Congress candidate and retired IAS officer MGVK Bhanu by a margin of 2,40,345 votes. Das secured 6,75,962 (57.48%) while Bhanu secured 4,36,945 (37.08%)votes.

However, final results of all the constituencies will be officially announced on Friday.
