GUWAHATI, Oct 2: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal made a fervent call to the people of the state for a pledge to make cleanliness as a way of life. He also appealed them to keep their minds free from all sorts of negativity and ingrain the same with positive thoughts and ethical values.
Sonowal made this call while taking part in the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, Swachh Bharat Divas and closing ceremony of Swachhata Hi Seva at Bihpuria Sports Association Playground in Lakhimpur district on Monday. The programme was organised by Mission Directorate of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), Assam in association with Lakhimpur District Water and Sanitation Committee.
Stating good deeds and clean thoughts as prerequisite for good governance, Sonowal called upon the public representatives and government servants to maintain uprightness and integrity in their work. He also underlined the importance of ethics in building a strong society and said that no personality can be strong enough without a sturdy moral foundation.
Recalling Gandhiji’s teachings of peace, Sonowal mentioned that the whole world is following his ideology to develop a peaceful world. “We need to develop the personality of the youth based on positivity and ethical values”, he exhorted. The chief minister also advocated joint initiative by all the four pillars of democracy in this regard.
Coinciding the celebration, Sonowal awarded Nalbari and Sonitpur district for their excellence in implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission in their respective districts. He also gave away prizes to winners of various state and district level competitions which were held in connection with the Swachhata Hi Seva programme.
While PHE minister Rihon Daimary delivered the welcome speech, minister of state for P&RD Naba Kumar Doley, MP RP Sarma, local MLA Debananda Hazarika and Innovator Uddhav Bharali also spoke on the occasion.
MLAs Emmanuel Mosahary, Utpal Dutta, Utpal Bora, former minister Premadhar Bora, chairman of Deori Autonomous Council and host of other dignitaries were present in the programme.
Prior to the celebration, Sonowal offered floral tribute to the Father of the Nation at the programme venue.
Later, he took part in the Gandhi Jayanti celebration organised by Bihpuria-Narayanpur District Freedom Fighters’ Association at Madhabdev College on Monday and laid the foundation stone of a Muktijujaru Bhavan to be set up at Narayanpur.
