BOKO, Sept 9: Four persons, including a woman were arrested in connection with Saturday’s attack on a team of Assam government officials at Malngkona on Sunday, police officials said.
On Saturday a team of officials of public health engineering department (PHED) led by chief engineer Saumya Kumar Baruah and additional chief engineer Gautam Paul was attacked by a group of people at Malngkona under Boko Police Station in Kamrup district. The officials were beaten up by the people and forced them to sign in some white papers, sources here said.
After the release, the officials lodged an FIR with Boko Police Station on Saturday night. A team of police officials led by Kamrup superintendent of police Partha Sarathi Mahanta and officer in charge of Boko Police Station Jogendra Barman conducted a raid in the village and arrested four persons in connection with the incident.
Those who have been arrested are: Habarth Marak (46), Aila Sangma (40), Tangmui Marak (20) and Williamson Marak (50). They have been brought to Boko Police station where senior police officials continued to interrogate them.
On the other hand, fearing police raid, most of the people of the village left their houses and shifted to a safer destination. “The real culprits behind the incident are yet to be booked as there is none in the village,” said a police official.
The team of officials has visited the village to take up a scheme under Swacch Bharat Abhijan as Assam government has planned to declare the Malngkona Village as one of the cleanest village of the state. However, the people of the village rejected to accept Assam government’s scheme saying that the village belongs to Meghalaya not of Assam. They also broke some toilets constructed by PHED in the area, sources here said.

The organisation also demanded Assam government to evict all illegal settlers along the inter-state border. “We demand immediate arrest of the culprits involved in assault of Assam government officials at Malngkona. We also demand Assam government to free all lands encroached by the people of neighbouring states, especially Meghalaya and Nagaland,” a representative of the organisation Gauranga Choudhury told this correspondent.
