IMPHAL, April 9 (Newmai): In a boost to Congress in Manipur, Secular Democratic Front Manipur (SDFM) has, on Monday, declared the regional party’s support to Congress candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
SDFM is an alliance of altogether eight political parties – Aadmi Admi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Janhit Sangharsh Party (RJSP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Manipur People’s Council (MPC), Janata Dal (S), Trinamool Congress (TC), Democratic Bharatiya Samaj Party (DBSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP).
Addressing a press conference at SP office in Imphal, SDFM convenor Th Inaocha said that one of the main reasons for extending support to the Congress candidates was to prevent BJP from coming to power again at the Centre.
The Front will extend its full support to the Congress and will not leave any stone unturned to defeat the BJP candidates.
He expressed fear that if BJP comes to power again at the Centre, CAB will be brought back while reminding BJP president Amit Shah’s assurance in one of party rallies in Assam recently.
He reiterated SDFM’s strong opposition to the CAB and said that there no change to front’s stand.
Another agenda of supporting the Congress was to safe democracy and secular structure of the country, he said while alleging that under BJP rule the democracy of the country was in stake besides threatening the secularism of the country.
He added that the front has decided to support to the Congress after the party (Congress) agreed to a memorandum consisting 22 points of the front.
Among other, the memorandum included focussing on Manipur issues and to stand tooth and nail against BJP’s plan to implement CAB and also repeal of AFSPA from the entire state.
The Congress further agreed to conduct fresh survey to the controversial border pillar at the Manipur sector of Indo-Myanmar border, the convenor added.
Meanwhile, Manipur Congress today cautioned the voters of the state on voting in favour of BJP candidates while asserting that voting in favour of BJP was similar to agreeing to implementation of the CAB.
Addressing a party rally in Imphal East Monday, Congress candidate O Nabakishore alleged that national leaders of BJP have a firm commitment to implement the CAB which was strongly opposed by the indigenous people of whole northeast, including Manipur.
He said that BJP still committing to the implementation of CAB and this showed that the party has no affection towards the people of the Northeast.
