IMPHAL, Aug 9 (Newmai): Manipur police on Thursday foiled a rally which was planned to be carried out in connection with the Quit India Movement observation organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in Imphal. Police fired tear gas shells in the Congress Bhavan complex to disperse the Congress leaders and members.
When about 200 Congress leaders, youths, students and Seva Dal volunteers of the Congress party led by former Chief Minister O Ibobi tried to take out the rally from Congress Bhavan, a large number of Manipur police personnel stopped them from further proceeding from the gate saying CrPC 144 has been clamped in the Imphal area and that permission was not granted for the rally.
The police fired several tear gas shells to disperse the Congress members.
Strongly reacting to the police action, former chief minister O Ibobi said that the government action was to “assassinate democracy”. He also termed it as “anti-national and uncivilized action” of the BJP led government.
Ibobi Singh said that the rally was an annual programme of the Congress party to pay homage and respect to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
Ibobi said that they knew the hypersensitive areas in Imphal such as Raj Bhawan and the civil secretariat site, and added that they were not moving through those areas while carrying out the rally. “We seek permission to the concerned authority for the rally informing the routes we were to take but the government denied permission to us,” alleged Ibobi Singh.
He then asked as to why the BJP led state government disallowed the rally. “This day is being observed nationwide to pay homage to the Father of the Nation in his statue, Ibobi stated.
The former chief minister then said that it was an attempt of the BJP government to “rule as dictator”. He added that the people should judge what type of government is the BJP led government. “They are trying to rule by suppressing the voice of the people,” stated Ibobi.
