Mega mock drill conducted in Nagaland

Dimapur, Aug 30: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in association with District Disaster Management Authorities and the governmental departments concerned, civil societies and the communities organized Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise (NEPEx) today. This exercise was to generate awareness among the communities and the different agencies on how to establish mechanism for effective response to any disaster.

At 11 am, all disaster management forces across Nagaland swung into action to contain damages caused by a 8.4 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter between Kohima and Phek at a stretch of around 80-90 Km from Kohima, an official release said.

The mock drill records a real time disaster response across the 11 districts of the Srare. In the Incident Command Post stationed at the State headquarters, the tragedy and damage reported shows heavy loss across the State. Most of the districts reported damages of properties like collapsed buildings, land erosions and people trapped under debris. Massive landslides and electrical break downs were the main issues hindering the rescue operations.

The exercise began with an emergency siren at the State capital Kohima and all the district headquarters, villages and institutions. Immediately, people in the schools, institutions and offices were asked to respond by a method of Drop, Cover and Hold for two minutes until the siren was sounded for the second time. State Emergency Operation Centre and District Emergency Operation Centres were activated during the emergency exercise. Volunteers from different departments and villages participated in the mock drill.

The Kohima district staging area which was located at the IG stadium area also conducted the mock drill. The mock drill was exercised under Kohima Deputy Commissioner as Response Officer (RO) and Additional Deputy Commissioner as Incident Commissioner (IC). During the mock drill exercise, different committees like Planning section, Operation section, Logistic section, Response branch, Air operation section, Medical unit were set up, and to assist the operation volunteers from Kohima Science College NCC group, Polytechnic and the DEF rendered their services.

Nagaland lies under Seismic Zone V and is vulnerable to many natural calamities such as earthquake, landslide, flashflood, thunderstorm, hailstorm, forest fire etc.

Commissioner & Secretary, NSDMA, Khrienuo Metha said the two-hour long exercise added some awareness to all the line departments and the public to respond to such calamities. NEPEx showcased the possibilities of a multi-impact of disaster effects and it will be organizing such drills annually during different seasons of the year to make Nagaland a safer and resilient society.
