SHILLONG, Sept 21: The East Khasi Hills police will quiz five Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militants who were arrested from by the troops of Red Horn Division of Indian Army from West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.
A police team will leave for Diphu shortly, East Khasi Hills district police chief Davis Marak said on Thursday.
“The district police would do some basic interrogation of the five arrested cadres there to find out if the banned outfit has set up any link with any Assam-based militant organisation,” he said.
He, however, said that there was no report of the banned HNLC regrouping in the East Khasi Hills, adding that their firepower, weaponry and activities remained more or less the same.
On being asked if HNLC was expanding its wings to the neighbouring state, Marak said, “There is a possibility but nothing could be said on the matter before completing interrogation of those arrested cadres”.
According to Marak, as per the confessions of some surrendered HNLC militants, the strength of the outfit was less than 30 at present. Marak also added that there were some inputs about HNLC trying to do some mischief during this year’s Independence Day celebrations and accordingly police intensified security.
“We are taking anything related to militancy very seriously and we are on the job,” he added.
