JORHAT, Aug 11:Ganashilpi Moghai Oja Kalakshetra, will be a centre of Assam Cultural University, to be set up in Majuli. This was disclosed by ACU vice chancellor Dr Dambarudhar Nath in a meeting here Sunday where he was also felicitated.
Ganashilpi Moghai Oja Kalakshetra was set up at Hatogarh in Jorhat district in 1978 in memory of Oja Moghai Baruah (1916–1978), who popularised the Dhol to the world audience. “Moghai Oja will be included in the curriculum of Assam Cultural University,” Dr Nath added.
Ojah was born in Naosolia Gaon in Jorhat and died in Jorhat on March 15, 1978. Dr Nath also said that the degree college to be set up by Ganashilpi Moghai Oja Kalakshetra to study folk musical instruments will also be recognised by the Assam Cultural University.
The university will give special thrust on Bihu culture apart from research and development of traditional cultures of various ethnic groups of the northeast, he added.
Retired deputy commissioner of Dhemaji district, Ajit Kumar Bordoloi and lecturer of DCB Girls College, Dr Padmalochan Nath also graced the occasion.
