Guv stresses on developing flood resilient crop varieties
GUWAHATI, Aug 3: With an aim to develop agriculture and to use it for the socio-economic development of the people of the state, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has adopted Morigaon district for development of agriculture and allied activities.
A meeting held in the conference hall of Raj Bhavan, to decide on the modus operandi of implementing the scheme of things.
Mukhi sought a detailed report from the Agriculture department to take the project off.
Mukhi said that agriculture and horticulture are the major contributors for the socio-economic development and taken in right earnest, the sectors have the potential in creating huge employment avenues besides ensuring food security, self-reliance and can contribute to the growth of economy.
Stating that agriculture and the allied sectors have crucial role in the development of State Gross Domestic Product, these areas should be encouraged to bloom and catapult state’s development. Mukhi also maintained that Assam is primarily an agrarian economy where agriculture has a key role to play in pushing forward the economic growth trajectory.
The Governor also observed that, “In a state where a major chunk of the population is engaged in agriculture, their financial position needs to be made stronger in order to make the edifice of state’s economy stronger. We have to ensure that income of the farmers is doubled”. He further said the agriculture department should act as a force multiplier and maintain constant monitoring to achieve agricultural growth and realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of doubling the income of Indian farmers by 2022.
The Governor said Morigaon is agriculturally potential district and most of the people are associated with agriculture so developing the district agriculturally will lead to capacity building of the people living in the district.
Mukhi asked deputy commissioner Morigaon Rituraj Borah to conduct monthly meetings and monitor the activities very closely. He also asked the DC to establish value chain and prospective markets so that the farmers get good return for their crops.
The Governor also urged upon the in-charge Vice Chancellor Assam Agricultural University Dr. Ashok Bhattacharya to formulate plans, draw road maps and help the farmers to go for multiple cropping. In order to make the farmers more self efficient, latest technology should be provided to the farmers so that they can practice multiple cropping. Researches should be conducted to develop crops which doesn’t get destroyed during floods as well.
Minister of state for health and family welfare Pijush Hazarika thanked the Governor for choosing Morigaon as the model district and also assured to extend all cooperation in making the district agriculturally developed.
Commissioner and secretary (animal husbandry and veterinary) Shyam Jagannathan, secretary and director of agriculture Manoj Kumar, secretary and director of irrigation and fishery Rakesh Kumar gave a power point presentation.
Secretary to Governor Sanjiv Kumar Gohain Baruah, higher officials of agriculture and allied departments were present in the meeting.
