NAGAON, Nov 8: Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi said that both Guru Nanak ji and Srimanta Sankardeva were the embodiment of wisdom, peace, unity and universal brotherhood who worked for enlightenment of humanity. Both of them discouraged caste system and spread their value system to wipe out caste, creed etc.
Inaugurating a mega exhibition to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji, organised by Regional Outreach Bureau, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting held at police reserve field here on Friday, Mukhi said in today’s world, teachings of Guru Nank Dev ji and Sankardeva hold tremendous importance to keep the people united and grounded by giving them the wisdom of ethical and spiritual life.
Terming both Guru Nanak Dev and Sankardeva as the spiritual genius of their time, the Governor said that the teachings of both taught the people to weed out caste, creed, colour of the skin which according to him are regressive forces to the progress of the society.
Hailing the Regional Outreach Bureau for organising the mega exhibition on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Governor said that the exhibition is the testimony to the fact that Guru Nanak Dev ji is omnipresent and he always guides people to right direction.
The Governor also said that Assam is a state which is known for its natural beauty and unique spirituality which is shaped by the teachings of none other than 16th century Vaishnava Pandit Srimanta Sankardeva who was not only a religious preceptor, but also a social reformer. He also unified the diverse ethnic groups of north east India and assimilated them with the national mainstream.
The Governor also said that Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva and Guru Nanak were the leading lights of medieval Bhakti movement. They both left permanent marks on the society in the sub-continent in both religious and cultural spheres. There are many similarities in the religious principles preached by these two great social reformers who were born in an era tormented by social strives.
However, both of them through their works and teachings, built a bridge of unity and brought all sections of the people to the blessings of the almighty. He also called upon the people to lead their life following the teachings of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva and Guru Nanak Dev.
Earlier, Mukhi inaugurated the newly constructed Langer Hall of Gurudwara Prabandhak committee to mark the celebrations of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nank Dev ji.
