KOKRAJHAR, Sept 20: The All BTC Nath Yogi Students Union demanded declaration of state holiday on September 20 as Swahid Divas to pay respect and honour to the martyrs of 1942 freedom movement at Dekiajuli where Manbar Nath sacrificed his life.
Union President Phukan Nath said that the Nath Yogi community has contributed a lot in the freedom movement of India, but has not been getting its due respect and honour from the state government. He added that the community is till date remaining much behind in the aspect of development and welfare among the society. He further demanded granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the community and creation of a satellite autonomous council in the state immediately for development and welfare of the Nath Yogi people.
Meanwhile, the 42nd Swahid Divas was observed at Gendrabill ground and Fakiragram Public High School ground in Kokrajhar district to mark the death anniversary of Manbar Nath, who sacrificed his life for the cause of Indian freedom movement.
The day was organised by All Assam Nath Yogi Students Union and BTC Nath Yogi Students Union separately with a day long programme. ABSU general secretary Lawrence Islary graced the programme as the chief guest and said that the Nath Yogi students’ union was working for the welfare and development of the community and urged the citizens to come forward to bring upliftment and educational development in the region.
