DIPHU, Sept 13: The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) welcomed the verdict of the Gauhati High Court directing Assam government to hold election to the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) within December 3.
The High Court on Wednesday passed an order asking the Assam government to conduct the elections to the council within December 3 saying that it will not accept any order of the government for further extension of the term of the executive committee of the council. The court has also asked the government to announce the date of the election in its next hearing on October 4.
A day after the order the ASDC said the BJP-led government has bulldozed the democracy by refusing to hold elections to the council and extending the term of the council.
“The judgement of Gauhati High can be termed as victory for democracy. The same implies in respect of elections to town committees in Karbi Anglong district,” the ASDC said in a statement here Thursday.
