Sachetan Nagarik Mancha to submit memo demanding error-free NRC in Assam
GUWAHATI, June 16:Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, Asom (SNM) will send a memorandum with signatures of 30 lakh people of the state to President Ram Nath Kovind ahead of the publication of the most awaited National Register of Citizen (NRC) slated on July 31.
“An error-free NRC is the demand of all section of the people of Assam. We would like to thank the Supreme Court of India for its role in the whole procedure. But, there is somewhere a doubt in the minds of the people since many anomalies have been reported in recent times,” SNM convenor Chandan Bhattacharya said,
At least 200 people from 39 families in Morigaon district had made their way into the final NRC draft that published on July 30 even as Foreigner’s Tribunal (FT) declared them as foreigners. On June 13, two NRC officials – Syed Shahjahan and Rahul Parasar were caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from one Kajari Ghosh Dutta of Ananda Nagar in Guwahati.
“Already we have submitted an affidavit before the Supreme Court in the matter. We will appeal the apex court for 100 per cent re-verification of the names included in the NRC,” Bhattacharya further said. “The signature campaign is already under process in 2,202 panchayats in the state at present. We will send the memorandum ahead of the publication of the NRC,” he added.
“We hope that all Indians should get included in the NRC and not a single illegal migrant should get included in the NRC,” Lawyer Bijan Mahajan adding, “The final NRC will be a death trap if a single foreigner gets included in the NRC and that is what every person in Assam has in mind.”
The key person behind the NRC – Abhijeet Sharma of Assam Public Works (APW) also hoped for publication of an error-free NRC under the Supreme Court’s supervision.
