DIPHU, Nov 14: Nagarik Suraksha Manch (NSM) on Wednesday castigated Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for passing a comment on 70 indigenous organisations which have been spearheading agitation against the passing of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
“Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed surprise and said that it needs research as to how 70 organisations have come up to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. But why he is not surprised at 140 organisations in three districts of Barak Valley which have supported the Bill? Only 70 organisations are protesting from Brahmaputra Valley,” NSM president Mahajon Kro told reporters here.
“We are against the Citizenship Bill. The NSM and Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum (KAWJF) are taking part in the Sankalpa Sikha Yatra in Guwahati on November 16, he said.
“The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 cannot be implemented at any cost. We are not against any community and not certainly against the Bengali community. We are against all Bangladeshis irrespective of community whether Hindu or not. Even if the Bangladeshis are Karbis they cannot be allowed to settle here,” he also said.
He further said that the legislators, political parties, including Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and Congress should make their stand clear on the Bill.
KAWJF president Beaulet Beypi, general secretary Presila Terangpi and social worker Mohon Rongpi were also present in the press conference.
