Girindra Bala Kempral, born on December 19, 1940, in Swarna Bagan, Haflong, breathed her last on January 17, 2024, at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati, at the age of 84. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, intellect, and profound contributions to her community.
Born into the Khersa family to late Swarna Kumar Khersa and late Phulomoti Khersa, Girindra Bala was the ninth among five brothers and six sisters. From a young age, she exhibited exceptional academic abilities, attending Government Boys’ and Girls’ LP School, Haflong, and excelling in her studies.
Despite societal pressures, Girindra Bala pursued education alongside familial responsibilities. She married late Birendra Chandra Kemprai at the age of 13, with a commitment from her parents to continue her studies post-marriage. She fulfilled this promise, achieving outstanding results in her examinations despite numerous challenges.
Girindra Bala’s commitment to education extended to her professional life, where she served as a dedicated teacher. She received accolades, including Assam’s Best Teacher Award in 1970, underlining her exceptional contributions to the field.
Beyond her teaching career, Girindra Bala was a beacon of spirituality and intellectual curiosity. She translated significant works, such as ‘Katha Mrita’, from Bengali to Dimasa language, leaving a lasting impact on literature and culture.
Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and community. Girindra Bala Kempral’s life exemplified strength, wisdom, and compassion. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations to pursue excellence and uphold values of knowledge and integrity.
In her honour, a memorial service will be held on March 1, 2024, at her residence in Haflong. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered for her remarkable achievements and the profound impact she made on all who knew her.
