DIPHU, July 27: An Outreach Programme was organised by Childline, Kabi Anglong at Believers Eastern Church, Rongjangphong here on Friday to create awareness on child care and protection among the people of the locality.
Centre Coordinator, Childline, Karbi Anglong, Bulu Terang explaining about the importance of childline in the district said it is a helpline through which various issues and problems of children can be addressed and also help those children in need.
In other parts of the country, childline has been already introduced, in Karbi Anglong its introduction was late, Terang said and added, “Child trafficking is prevalent in India. In terms of child labour, the country is second in the world. Children between the ages of 14-16 are forced to earn from physical labour which is a crime. If a child has attained the age of 16 and wanted to earn, he/she has to register in labour union.”
Terang also said engaging children as domestic helps is also a crime. “There are many instances, where due to poverty and other reasons the child do not get proper education at primary level and when he/she comes to Diphu and stayed with relatives or known family for the purpose of education. The child’s education suffers and gradually he/she hesitates going school. That child may be engaged in doing all domestic works. In Diphu if we go around and search, we will find that in many homes such practice is going on,” Terang said.
The programme was jointly organised by Bridge of Hope, Diphu diocese and Childline, Karbi Anglong. The Childline is a project supported by ministry of women and child development.
