SHILLONG, Aug 20: Over Rs 12 lakh has been seized in poll-bound Ranikor. According to an official source, the zonal magistrate and police at Rajaju under Ranikor civil sub-division seized Rs 12,86,000 belonging to four separate businessmen.
One of the persons was carrying Rs 6 lakh.
The source added that there was no indication of any party affiliation of the persons who were carrying the cash.
However, there was no withdrawal slips for the cash that was seized. The seized cash was forwarded to the court and an appellate committee will examine the matter, the source added.
The South West Khasi Hills district authorities are keeping vigil to thwart any unfair practices in the run-up to the polls.
Meanwhile, the campaigning for the August 23 by-polls to South Tura and Ranikor constituencies ends on Tuesday evening.
Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said all arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair election and polling parties have been asked to reach polling stations well in advance.
South Tura will witness a four-cornered contest with chief minister Conrad Sangma being one of the candidates.
In Ranikor, NPP’s Martin M Danggo will face UDP’s Pius Marwein, PDF’s PN Syiem and Congress’s Jackiush Sangma.
Security in the two poll-bound constituencies has been tightened. West Garo Hills SP Raghvendra Kumar MG said police have four naka check points round the clock. Four companies of central armed paramilitary forces have already been deployed.
The neighbouring state of Assam has been alerted and the international border in West Garo Hills has been sealed.
