GUWAHATI, July 29: The Guwahati Police on Tuesday seized unaccounted cash of over Rs 74 lakh from a woman residing in Solapara area of the city.
The police have reasons to believe that the money amounting to Rs 74,05,600/- is suspected to be utilized in financing of illicit traffic of narcotropic substance.
“Based on source input about presence of narcotropic substance an operation was conducted in 4th floor of Kalachini Apartment, Solapara. During the operation, the apartment premises of one Sangita Laishangbam wife of Paunam Shyam Singh hailing from Imphal was searched,” an official statement of Assam Police here said.
“During the search unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 74,05,600 suspected to be utilized in financing of illicit traffic of narcotropic substance, was recovered and duly seized,” the statement said.
Two persons identified as Sam Laithangbam son of late Laithangbam Mangi Singh (Imphal) and Thangkhosat son of Khophau (Churachndpur) were arrested in this connection.
Accused Sangita Laishanbam was earlier arrested in Basistha PS case no 449/19 under section 22 of NDPS Act where she was found in possession of narcotropic substance.
“Further, she was constantly in touch with known drug peddlers, and was suspected to be supplying drugs to one Tashur Ali who was arrested in Bharalumukh PS case no 315/2020 under section 22 (B) of NDPS Act,” it said.
Police have registered a case No.501/2020 under section 27A/29 of NDPS Act in Paltan Bazar Police station in this connection.
On the basis of confessional statement of the accused L Sangeeta Rani Laishambam, the police conducted another round of search at 6 no. Gate under Bharalumukh police station and arrested one Asadul Hoque (35) son of Samsul Hoque (Bilassipara) and Joynam Khatoonn wife of Kuran Ali.
The police also recovered Rs 2.58 lakh cash, 23 gm brown sugar, 2 Scooty, gold jewellery and a passport belonging to Moina Begum from them.
