GUWAHATI, Aug 11: A plant adoption programme was held on Saturday in Gauhati University in the inaugural function of Biodiversity Conservation and Interpretation Centre. The chief dignitary of the programme was the vice chancellor of Gauhati University, Dr. Mridul Hazarika. The other dignitaries present were Prof. A.K. Handique, Dean, Faculty of Technology., Prof. P.P Baruah, HOD, Department of Botany, Gauhati University and Prof. J. Kalita, Department of Zoology, Gauhati University.
The programme commenced with a welcome speech by Prof. Prasanta Kr. Saikia, HOD, Department of Zoology. He emphasised on the importance of Biodiversity Conservation and the need for establishment of an interpretation centre in an eco-friendly environment. This was then followed by a motivating speech of the vice chancellor, who praised the initiative of Department of Zoology, and stressed on the need of sincerity in Biodiversity Conservation in the long run. “The young generations have to carry forward such noble initiative”, he added. Prof. D. Sarma delivered vote of thanks and acknowledge the contribution of students in the science and the programme was anchored by Dr. Kuladip Sarma, DS Kothari Post Doctoral Fellow, Dept. of Zoology.
The inauguration ceremony was followed by plantation programme of various fruit and medicinal plants in hostel campuses and in the Aquaculture & Biodiversity Conservation Centre, Gauhati University. The saplings were provided by WWF-India under “Adopt A Tree” campaign.
