Morigaon, Sept 27: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, the densest habitat of one-horned rhinos situated in Morigaon district will be opened for both domestic and foreign tourists on October 2 next, official sources informed here on Wednesday. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary covering 38 sq. km of swamp land is just 48km away from state capital Guwahati.
The sanctuary has more than 100 Indian one horned rhinos, more than 1,500 wild buffaloes and 1,200 hogs besides hundreds of snakes of different species of wildlife. With the advent of winter, thousands of foreign birds come to Pobitora. It may be mentioned here that the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary was completely inundated by the floods during last month and its infrastructures were badly damaged by the flood.
However the forest department has repaired the damaged infrastructures and sanctuary was ready for the next tourist year. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary collected revenue of Rs 33 lakh from the tourists last year.
