GUWAHATI, June 10: The arrested retired school teacher Prakash Rajkonwar alias Chao Naam Ti Lao was in constant touch with ULFA-I supremo Paresh Asom and other top leaders of the banned outfit, Guwahati police commissioner Deepak Kumar informed here Monday.

Rajkumar was arrested by a team of Guwahati city police with the help of Dibrugarh police from a rented house owned by Sundar Rajkonwar at Milan nagar in Dibrugarh town on Sunday evening. He was brought to the city on Sunday night.

Rajkonwar was charged with the grenade explosion case in front of Guwahati central shopping Mall in which 12 people were injured on May 15.

“Prakash Rajkonwar alias Chao Naam Ti Lao has been working for the ULFA-I since 2017. He was involved in the process of selection and recruitment of new cadres of the outfit,” Kumar told reporters here. Rajkonwar is currently being interrogated by police at Latashil police station.

Rajkonwar had coordinated with pro-talk ULFA leader Pranamoy Rajguru and a little-known TV actor Jahnabi Saikia, who were earlier arrested by the police on charges of being involved in the blast. Police have received information about Rajkonwar’s involvement in various anti-national activities, Kumar said.

“Police have been continuing investigation into the case and those, against whom there is information of involvement with ULFA-I, will be picked up and interrogated,” Kumar further said.

Police seized one computer and four mobile handsets from Rajkonwar, who worked as a teacher at Dirak LP School. The banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) had claimed responsibility of the blast.

The police have so far arrested pro-talks ULFA leader Pranamoy Rajguru, TV actor Jahnabi Saikia, surrendered ULFA activist Chinmoy Lahkar (Guwahati), Amit Ballav Goswami (Golaghat), Indra Mohan Bora (Nagaon) and a former president of the Gauhati University Post Graduate Students’ Union (2016-17) Sanjib Talukdar in connection with the case.

Rajguru and Saikia were arrested within 24 hours of the blast. The prime accused senior ULFA-I cadre Bijoy Asom alias Bijay Bora alias Papu Rajbongshi was arrested from Dangori under Doomdooma police station in Tinsukia district on May 21.

Rajkonwar was produced before the court of the chef judicial magistrate of Kamrup (metro), who remanded him to seven-day police remand for further investigation into the case.
