Pre-poll violence: BJP leader shot dead in Barak Valley, another injured

GUWAHATI, March 20: Unidentified miscreants shot dead a BJP leader and injured another at Lathigram in Assam’s Cachar district on Tuesday night ahead of the three-phase Lok Sabha elections in the state slated for April 11, 18 and 23.

The injured has been shifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The deceased has been identified as Sukhendu Das, president of Haticherra Gram Panchayat under Udharbond Leglslative Assembly Constituency.

Sukhendu Das was coming back from an event when miscreants shot at him and his nephew Rinku Senapati. Both of them were coming on a motor cycle at the time of the incident.

The critically wounded Sukhendu was immediately shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries.

Senior police and security officials rushed to the spot to take the stock of the situation.

“It is very unfortunate incident. We demanded that the culprits should be punished. Sukhendu Das was a nice person,” a local resident said.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the killing of the BJP leader and asked Udharbond MLA Mihir Kanti Shome to take the stock of the situation. The chief minister also directed the police to book the culprits involved in the incident immediately.

Two persons have been picked up by the police for interrogation in this connection.
