AIZAWL, Sept 9 (Newmai): With the state assembly drawing very near, Mizoram has witnessed yet another political development on Saturday. Three regional parties in Mizoram- People’s Represent for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM), Mizoram Chhantu Pawl (MCP) or Save Mizoram Front and Operation Mizoram has forged a pre-poll electoral alliance to work under one banner in the upcoming assembly elections.
This was announced before media by Operation Mizoram convener, Vanlalhuma Kawlni.
The PRISM- MCP- Mizoram Operation alliance came a year after Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), an electoral alliance involving seven political parties was formed in August last year.
Elections to 40 assembly seats of Mizoram are due at the end of this year.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference at PRISM office here, Kawlni said the alliance would take efforts to bring back the entire Mizoram under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect the state as a “tribal area”, if it comes to power after the state assembly elections. He also said that when Mizoram was upgraded to union territory in 1972, it ceased to be a “tribal area” under the Sixth Schedule barring three autonomous district councils in the south- Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC), Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) and Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC). Kawlni also said that it will be politically and socially unsafe for the people if the entire Mizoram is not brought back under Sixth Scheduled area. Kawlni further said that the alliance would give priority to resolving the long pending border dispute between Mizoram and Assam. He strongly asserted that the alliance could not accept the constitutional boundary declared by the Union Home ministry and Assam government in 1933.
The actual and constitutional boundary of Mizoram according to Kawlni was the one that was declared by the British as ‘Southern Frontier of the Cachar district,’ which was notified in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873. He added that this boundary was declared as Lushai Territory according to Inner Line Reserved Forest Declaration in 1877.
Kawlni then said that the alliance would take measures to drive out “foreigners and illegal migrants” from the state if it comes to power. He added that The Scheduled Caste and The Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 will be enforced in stricter manner to constitutionally safeguard the state.
Kawlni then said that the alliance would take efforts to uproot corruption, establish transparent government, work for development of the youths and bring sustainable development in the state by exploiting natural resources.
