DIPHU, Dec 12: A programme was organised for creating awareness and care among disabled persons by Jirsong Asong under the aegis of Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) at parish hall here on Tuesday.
A large number of disabled persons from in and around Diphu attended the programme.
Entertainment programmes like dance, songs, and games among the disabled persons were orgranised. The programme was organised for Lumbajong Block of CBR.
UDA cum accountant, Vocational Training cum Rehabilitation Centre (VTRC), District Social Welfare (DSW) Rita Teronpi informed the disabled persons to have a bank account to avail pension scheme and other government benefits. She also said they should come for registration at DSW and the certificate given to them will enable them to apply for jobs, pension scheme and other government facilities.
Koilyan Chakroborty of VTRC, DSW said disability may be by birth, by accident, mental retardation and orthopedic handicapped. He said immunisation of pregnant mothers and vaccination of babies should be done by parents so that there is no disability. The reservation for the disabled has been increased from 3 to 4 percent. He urged the disabled persons to come to VTRC, DSW to take training on book binding, cane and bamboo handicraft.
Education Volunteers, SSA Kledish Teronpi, who herself is also physically challenged said her parents were very much supportive due to which she become self dependent. Another physically challenged person Sujit Nath said parents discriminate against disabled children and do not send them to schools. Disabled children should be sent to school as they too have the right to education.
Project applicant, CBR Fr. Thankachan also attended the programme.
Earlier, on December 9 World Disabled Day was observed by CBR at Rongmongve under Rongmongve Block with large participation of disabled persons.
