Guwahati, Sept 19: Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit and chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives in the Goalpara boat tragedy which claimed 10 lives mostly children.
In a statement, the Governor expressing his grief termed the incident to be very tragic. He also conveyed his deep sense of sorrow at the loss of human lives. He also said, “Though it is very difficult to negotiate with nature’s fury, he would ensure the administration to adopt precautionary steps to avert recurrence of such incidents in future”. The Governor also asked district administration Goalpara to render all possible help including payment of ex-gratia amount to the next of the kin of the deceased.
It may be mentioned that the boats boarded with local people were returning from Bogularbhita, Meghalaya after taking part in a traditional boat race when they were caught in the cyclonic storm on Sunday. The mishap occurred in Sabon River at Joraibeel.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed grief over the loss of life in the tragic incident of boat capsized in Sabon River at Joriabeel in Goalpara district on Sunday evening. Sonowal directed Goalpara DC to immediately release ex-gratia amount of 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and take all measures for safety of the boat passengers of the area.
