BJP using NRC, CAB as political instrument to polarise society: Cong
GUWAHATI, Nov 6: Senior Congress leader and former minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said that the ruling BJP is misleading people on Article 370 and Article 371.
“No one can beat BJP in distorting history. The Prime Minister has said that abrogation of Article 370 is a ‘tohfa’ (gift) to Sardar Patel. But Sardar Patel was the architect of Article 370,” Ramesh said. “Abrogation is only an insult to Sardar Patel,” the former union minister reiterated.
“The BJP is also misleading people about Article 371 in the Northeast. It is a lie that Article 371 provides protection to states like Nagaland and Sikkim,” he said.
“If Article 370 is temporary, Article 371 is also temporary. It’s wrong to say that Article 371 will protect the people of Northeast,” he added.
Ramesh accused the Modi government of using the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) as political instrument to divide and polarize society.
“What they are doing it goes against very principles of our constitution. The NRC in Assam is a historical legacy. But when Amit Shah talks about NRC in Bengal, Jharkhand, Delhi or in Karnataka, he uses it as a political instrument to divide and polarise society,” he said.
Ramesh further said that, Congress party is opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The senior Congress leader also slammed the BJP for its economic policies saying that Congress is against the proposed privatization of banks, Numaligarh Refinery Limited and Bharat Petroleum.
“Congress will continue to oppose the wrong economic policies of the BJP government,” Ramesh added.
Meanwhile, the state Congress on Wednesday staged a protest in Guwahati against the anti-people policies of Union government, economic slowdown in the country, price hike of essential commodities.
Several hundreds of Congress workers staged protests in front of the regional office of the Reserve Bank of India, Guwahati. Senior Congress leaders Ramesh, Harish Rawat, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora and many other leaders of the party took part in the protest.
Rajya Sabha member Ripun Bora said that, the country’s economy is in pathetic state only because of the Modi government’s wrong policies. Later, police had detained the protesters.
