Guwahati, Dec 23 (PTI): A 50-year-old man, held on charges of raping three minor girls, was shot at when he allegedly attempted to flee police custody in Assam’s Morigaon district on Thursday.
He was arrested on Wednesday, two days after family members of the girls filed complaints against him.
According to a local police officer, the complainants have claimed that the accused raped the three girls, all below 10 years of age, on several occasions, with the latest incident having been recorded on Sunday.
The officer also said that the accused, on being interrogated, admitted to have raped a fourth girl, too.
He claimed to have retained pieces of the fourth girl’s clothes at his residence.
The police, in their bid to gather evidence, was taking the accused to his residence early on Thursday when he attempted to flee custody, the officer said.
He was shot in the leg by the police.
The accused is undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, the officer added.
Taking to Twitter, special director general of police G P Singh said, “Rape of any kind is “abominable and deserves strongest lawful action. Well done @Morigaon Police”.
Altogether 32 people have been killed and at least 57 injured in police action since the BJP government, led by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, assumed office in May this year.
