NEW DELHI, July 20: The Centre’s main interlocutor in Nagaland, RN Ravi will be the new Governor of Nagaland as President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday appointed new Governors for Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Nagaland, West Bengal and Tripura.
A 1976 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Kerala cadre, Ravi retired as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau in 2012. He was appointed as chairman of Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC), which works under the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) in September 2014, months after the NDA came to power.
Ravi has closely worked with National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval during the latter’s stint as Intelligence Bureau Director and is learnt to have his confidence.
Ravi was in charge of the northeast desk during his stint with IB.
In a major rejig, Anandiben Patel replaced Ram Naik as new Uttar Pradesh Governor. Earlier, she was the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. A statement released by the Rashtrapati Bhavan also made the announcement about the Governors of other states.
Jagdeep Dhankhar has been appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. Ramesh Bais has been appointed as the Governor of Tripura. Lal Ji Tandon, who is at present the Governor of Bihar, has been transferred and appointed as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, the statement said. Tandon replaces Anandiben who has now got the charge of Uttar Pradesh. Phagu Chauhan has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.
“The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices,” the Rashtrapati Bhavan statement added.
Anandiben Patel was made the Governor of Madhya Pradesh in January 2018 last year. She replaced Om Prakash Kohli, who had additional charge of the office of MP Governor along with the office of Gujarat Governor. Later in August, she also got additional charge of Chhattisgarh following the death of Balramji Dass Tandon, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman said.
Patel is known as a ‘protégé’ of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She had succeeded Modi as Gujarat Chief Minister after the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. In 2016, she stepped down from the post of Chief Minister on the ground that she was completing 75 years so decided to step down in keeping with the party’s rule. She was the second BJP leader from Gujarat, who was appointed as Governor after Vajubhai Vala, who is the current Governor of Karnataka.
