GUWAHATI, March 2: Assam government on Friday released Rs 149 crore for distribution of free school uniforms to 37 lakh students studying in Lower Primary and Upper Primary Schools in the state.

The free distribution of school uniforms which was stalled in 2014-15 fiscal, has resumed in the current financial year after the ministry of human resource development has agreed to provide the fund after much persuasion by the incumbent state government.

Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that an amount of Rs 400 would be incurred per uniform and the scheme would continue in coming years too.

“We will ask for 1,962 crore rupees from the finance department to fix these issues before the next Gunotsav” he had said.

On October last, Sarma had said that the state government was considering for a new scheme to provide free uniforms to students.

On Monday, the minister has said that he will ask for Rs 1,962 crore from the finance department to fix the problems faced by government schools.

“10,000 schools need partition. Lack of partition or wall, several classes are held in the same room. 1,379 schools require toilets. 34,165 schools don’t have a power connection,” Sarma said announcing the results of third phase of Gunotsav in Guwahati.
