Morigaon, Feb 9: The 88th session of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha came to an end at Sahityarathi Lakhminath Bezboruah Khetra here with a resolution to fight against the move of the Union government for passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
This was decided in the first meeting of the newly-elected office bearers of the Sangha on the concluding day on Saturday.
None of the ministers of BJP-led government took part in the session due as the Sangha has been vocal against the contentious bill for the past several months. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited as the chief guest in the open session.
However, Modi during his speech in a public rally in Changsari, greeted all office bearers and members gathered on the occasion of the 88th session of the Sangha.
The open session was presided over by newly-elected Padadhikar of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, Kamala Kanta Gogoi.
Inaugurating the meeting, general secretary Prafulla Chandra Bora said that during last 88 years of its existence, the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha has been propagating the ideologies of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev uniting various ethnic groups living in Assam and Northeast in a common platform. The organisation will work for ushering in peace and prosperity in the region, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that Sankardev who propagated the new Vaishnavite Movement in Northeast built the foundation of Assamese literature and culture in 15th century. Srimanta Sankardev Sangha deserves thanks because this organisation has been doing its level best for the growth and development of the Sankari culture in the state for last 88 years, he said.
Addressing the gathering, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that international humanism propagated by Mahapurush Sankardev is still prevalent in present day’s Assam. Speaking on the occasion, noted social worker Hem Bhai highlighted spiritual value of works of Srimanta Sankardev.
Former minister Keshab Mahanta and Utpal Datta also graced the occasion.
The session concluded with holding of naam prasanga in the afternoon.
In the morning a cleanliness drive was taken out which was followed by a religious meeting chaired by Padadhikar Kamala Kanta Gogoi.
The next 89th session of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha will be held at Bokakhat in Golaghat district.
