JORHAT, Jan 16: A sit-in-demonstration was staged in front of the deputy commissioner’s office complex here by a few journalists supported by several other organisations to protest against police proceedings against a reporter of a news channel, arrest of KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.
The reporter Utpal Bora along with other protestors tied black cloths across their mouths. The protestors shouted slogans demanding the stopping of harassment of people who were protesting against the contentious CAA.
Police have allegedly found that the reporter instigated the protest at the venue where chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal was holding a shramik samaroh after laying the foundation stone of a primary health centre at ATCL’s Cinnamara tea estate on December 30. The lone protestor, Pritam Talukdar, who was arrested, had managed to get inside the venue and had been sitting inside the press gallery allegedly with the help of the reporter. Utpal is yet to be arrested.
According to the police, other evidences had also been found to link the reporter to the protestor. The protestors also demanded the unconditional release of Akhil Gogoi who has been booked under NIA for inciting violence during CAA protests.
