Haflong, Nov 28: A sensitization workshop on Children in Emergencies was held in Haflong on Tuesday. The workshop was held at Circuit House, Haflong organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Dima Hasao Haflong. Earlier the workshop was inaugurated by Dima Hasao assistant commissioner, Rahul Doley.
On the occasion, Dr J Doungel, Child Specialist, M & H. O, Civil Hospital Haflong, Dr Nirmal Singh, SPP and wellness expert, Haflong were present as the resource person along with Ricky Phukan, district project manager, DDMA. The objectives of the workshop is to learn and to prevent and respond to abuses, neglect, exploitation and violence against children which often escalate into full-fledged humanitarian situations if it is not respond to them in a timely and effective manner. During the program participants were able to learn and interact on the various issues and challenges during and aftermath of natural calamities or civil rights. The training focused on various child protection responses in emergency situation and learned that child protection can also be lifesaving together with other responses such as food, shelter, medicine, water, hygiene and sanitation responses. During the session safety and preventive measures for children at home and outdoor such as falls, travels, safe staircase, choking, other medical emergencies and importance for CPR were also discussed.
The training also highlighted the UNICEFs Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) and Child Protection in Emergencies (CPiE) intervention way of providing psychosocial support to children and communicating child protection messages with communities, families, children and authorities. These guidelines linked with existing guidelines on Camp Management and Women Friendly Space, as well as the global Guidelines for Child Friendly Spaces and the Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action. Lastly Ricky Phukan, DPM, DDMA has informed the trainees on ex-gratia and relief fund for the victim of natural calamities, fire etc. provided by the District Administration under various central and state govt. schemes.
