Court awards lifer for mother, sister of Govind
GUWAHATI, Aug 3: A fast-track court awarded death sentence to Govind Singhal in connection with the killing of Shweta Agarwal as the court pronounced the quantum of punishment on Saturday.
Apart from Govind, his mother Kamla Devi Singhal and elder sister Bhawani Singhal, both accused of the murder, were also sentenced to life imprisonment. The three accused were convicted by the court on July 30.
Shweta Agarwal, a 5th semester B Com student of KC Das Commerce College, was murdered in Shantipur area in the city on December 4, 2017. Prime accused Govind, during the investigation, had confessed to the crime.
Later, the charred body of 20-year-old girl, who hailed from Paltan Bazaar area, was recovered in the bathroom of Govind Singhal at Bharalumukh area. He was assisted by his mother and sister in the crime.
Sessions Judge Aparesh Chakraborty convicted Govind Singhal, his mother Kamala Devi and sister Bhawani on July 31 for Shweta’s murder.
Govind and Shweta were students of the same college and he had brought her to his residence after her exam.
The judgement was pronounced on the basis of evidences and statements given by 20 witnesses before the court. In favour of the accused three witnesses had given statements.
A case was registered with Bharalumukh Police Station. Within a short period, police arrested Govind, his mother and sister.
