Sonowal takes stock of Barshapara Stadium’s preparedness for T-20 match; express satisfaction over the arrangements

GUWAHATI, Sept 2: As a part of sequel of measures that chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been initiating for Guwahati to play host to the first T-20 international cricket match between India and Australia on October 10, Sonowal on Saturday evening visited Barshapara Stadium in the city and took stock of the preparations being undertaken for the match.

Chief minister Sonowal along with minister of state for youth welfare and sports Naba Kumar Doley took stock of the ground condition, pitch, pavilion, gallery, dressing room, commentary box, media stand and other ancillaries and expressed satisfaction over the quality of works put in place for the stadium to host the international match for the first time.

Sonowal also enquired about the seating capacity and the facilities, for the spectators to enjoy the match. Assam Cricket Association which is in the helm of affairs as the main organiser informed Sonowal that 37,800 tickets will be up for sale as they will be sold on-line. On being asked about the drainage, the ACA officials who were there during his visit informed Sonowal that the stadium has state-of-the art drainage facility which has the capacity of draining out water from strong spell of rain without even making the ground soggy.

As cricket loving spectators from this part of the region have been eagerly waiting for a T-20 match for quite some time, Sonowal asked ACA officials to leave no stone unturned for holding the match and set a precedent. He also assured ACA all assistance from the government. He also said that there will be fool-proof security and no laxity will be allowed from any quarter to creep in. Citing the example of South Asian Games, Sonowal said, “Assam has already earned the distinction of being a successful host when it comes to organise any international event and T-20 match between India and Australia will prove it once again”.

Sonowal also asked the ACA officials to make an arrangement to play Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s popular number ‘ei prithivi ek krirangan’ before the start of the match to set the mood of the electrifying crowd.

Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Pabitra Ram Khound, ACA vice president Debajit Saikia, general secretary Pradip Buragohain, secretary Sujit Choudhury and a host of others were present at the venue during chief minister’s visit.
