Simeon Rongphar arrested for his derogatory remark against CEM in a public rally on Dec 11
DIPHU, Dec 15: Left leaning Karbi Students Association (KSA) president Simeon Rongphar was arrested on Saturday for derogatory remark against Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief executive member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang.
The arrest has triggered widespread protest in Karbi Anglong with the KSA and its allied organisations calling for a 36-hour bandh from 5 am of December 16 demanding unconditional release of the student leader.
The arrest was made following an FIR lodged with Diphu Police Station by Tuliram’s brother Robiram Ronghang (son of Joysing Ronghang of Rongmongve, Ward No.V) alleging that the student leader had passed some “derogatory words” against CEM Tuliram Ronghang during a public meeting at Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park here on December 11.
In his address in the meeting organised to register their protest against the move of the Union government for granting ST(Hills) status to Bodos living in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, Rongphar said CEM Tuliram Ronghang should be “stabbed to death”.
Police have registered a case No. 270/ 18 under sections 189, 153, 506, 500, 504, 505 of IPC and 66F of Information Technology Act, 2000 against Rongphar.
KSA and its allied organisations have already criticised the government for the arrest and demanded unconditional release of Rongphar.
“On behalf of 16 organisations we demand immediate release of KSA president Simeon Rongphar if he is not released we will have to call a 36-hour bandh from 5 am of December 16,” KSA general secretary Thomson Rongpi said addressing a press conference at KSA office here on Saturday.
He also said that Rabiram Ronghang (the brother of Tuliram Ronghang) should be “severely judged” by the Karbis.
“On that day (December 11) we proceeded to KAAC for submission of memorandum. We did not take bombs or any weapons with us, for what reasons is our president Simeon Rongphar arrested? By arresting our president, CEM Tuliram Ronghang has exposed himself of being an anti-Autonomous State movement,” Rongpi said.
“Who is Rabiram Ronghang to file a case against him (Simeon Rongphar). Rabiram Ronghang should be severely judged by the Karbis. He should be isolated from Karbi society and face public persecution,” Rongpi said.
The Hills Committee of All India Students Association (AISA) secretary Ranjit Kramsa said, “If Simeon Ronghar is not released unconditionally an indefinite Karbi Anglong bandh might be called.”
Meanwhile, Simeon Rongphar said, “It is nothing but to cover up of CEM Tuliram Ronghang’s misdeeds so that the massive corruption by him does not reach the public. That is why he has filed a case against me. My arrest is not a big issue, what I want is during the tenure of CEM Tuliram Ronghang the Clause 8 of BLT Accord should be scraped and Autonomous State be granted.”
On the other hand, Karbi Cultural Society (KCS) appealed to the leaders of Karbi Students Association (KSA) to exempt the KCS as a meet has been called for constitution of reception committee for 45th Karbi Youth Festival on December 17.
In a press release here, the KCS said the meet has already been scheduled and if it is not carried out it will become a major hindrance.
