Morigaon, Sept 11: The Morigaon district unit of Assam Medical Service Association (AMSA) has expressed serious concern over the assault of its two members, Dr Chandan Sarma and Dr Pankaj Tripathy at Bhuragaon Subsidiary Health Centre (SHC) at around 11 am on September 8 by a group of miscreants when the doctors were on the duty at the SHC. In a press release, Morigaon AMSA secretary Dr Chandra Sing Deori said that on that day a group of errant students of Bhuragaon College entered the hospital and ransacked the doctor’s chamber, assaulted the doctors, nurses and other employees of the hospital on the flimsy ground that an ailing student was not looked by the doctors in proper time. Notably, the doctors were busy in the operation of a patient at the time of the incident.
The AMSA alleged that a mob was formed subsequently at the behest of the principal of the college and the errant students went on rampage pelting stones at the doctors quarters, hospital buildings and attacked doctors and employees of the hospital. The police and security forces rushed to the spot, rescued two doctors and employees from the mob. Meanwhile, joint director, health, Morigaon has lodged an FIR at Bhuragaon police station seeking arrest of Bhuragaon College principal Kandarpa Saikia, Prasanta Hazarika, Niharanjan Roy and Jagadish Baruah who instigated the students to attack the doctors on duty and damage the public property of the hospital.
The AMSA delegation met Morigaon deputy commissioner to arrest the culprit of the incident.
All the doctors under the banner of Morigaon AMSA on Monday staged a protest wearing black badges abstained from duties for one hour and demanded the government to arrest the culprits immediately. If the culprits are not arrested, the AMSA will go on cease work strike from Tuesday onwards.
